Sound Meets Silence

A simple sophrology group session can help calm raging tinnitus—especially for a veteran musician—by targeting the stress response, improving body awareness, and helping to retrain perception of internal noise. Here's how:

Supporting Tinnitus in the Music Industry

Tinnitus can be especially difficult for those who live and work in music. For musicians and producers, sound isn’t just part of the job — it’s part of who they are. When ringing, buzzing, or distortion invades that space, it can feel like more than a physical condition. It can shake confidence, creativity, and even identity.

My Experience with Musicians and Tinnitus

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with people in the music industry — including music veterans, young performers, and even a music producer. Each brought a unique relationship with sound, stress, tensions and the emotional weight of tinnitus.

Not every session brought dramatic change — and that’s important to acknowledge. One client, a talented producer, was also living with addiction and struggled to settle into the session. He found it difficult to stop talking, to be still, or to focus. And yet, even then, something valuable happened: the space to pause, to be heard, to breathe.

Sophrology doesn’t force anything. It meets people where they are — even in chaos, resistance, or discomfort. It can gently create the conditions for rest, for reconnection, and for a new relationship with the body and mind to begin.

Why Sophrology Can Help

For music professionals, sophrology offers a gentle yet structured way to reconnect with your internal rhythm — in a way that feels safe and respectful. It helps to:

  • Reduce the emotional and physical tension that can make tinnitus feel louder
  • Shift focus from the ears to other areas of the body
  • Reframe the perception of internal noise
  • Reconnect with calm through breath and gentle movements
  • Restore a sense of control and confidence, without trying to "fight" the tinnitus.

Why It Resonates with Musicians

Musicians have a deep sensitivity to sound, rhythm, and inner listening. That makes sophrology — with its rhythm-based breathing, guided inner awareness, and sensory visualisations — a natural fit.

Whether you’re on stage, in the studio, or in between gigs, sophrology can help bring calm into your nervous system and space into your mind — even if the noise hasn't stopped.

Here's the reaction of a veteran musician who took part to a sophrology group session for Stay Warm in Newton. The initial plan was to run a stress management session but I could see he was struggling with tinnitus and so I decided to run my first tinnitus relief group session instead. His relief and reaction stayed with me.
